Syrah I

We are always evolving and adjusting vineyard and winemaking variables to improve wines within the Vasse Felix Collection. Sometimes there are riskier trials we seek to explore on particular fruit parcels. Science and intuition suggests they may be great advancements; however we have only conventional experience. These trials are broken off from our primary programs. When the results are revolutionary, a small batch is bottled under a Black Label.


  • Colour

    Stunning bright deep garnet.

    Nose

    Attention grabbing, sexy, natural, whole and alive. Wild, earthy, peaty, pine forest floor, white pepper, grape stems, spiced plums and fresh blood plums.

    Palate

    Chewy, velvety texture with a dense dark berry compote and spicy natural forest tailings and flowers. So full upfront without being heavy, a creamy sensation with tiny tannins poking around. No line or length, just complete.
  • Winemaker's notes

    Years lacking winemaking excitement with Margaret River Shiraz, complaining about the clone, the climate for Shiraz, blaming everything except our boring fermentation techniques... Then we began trials with wild yeast fermentation and whole bunch carbonic maceration. This wine was made with 100% whole bunch carbonic maceration then finished with yeast fermentation in a small oak vat and matured for 11 months in old French oak, unfined, unfiltered and just a few cases bottled. The balance of this trial lies within the premium Shiraz under the Vasse Felix label.

  • Vintage Description

    Mild conditions in Margaret River with no extreme weather conditions, allowing for balanced fruit and a slow and steady intake. There was no disease pressure and fruit quality was excellent. The only disappointment was yields being down across the Region for all key varieties. This was the outcome of storms in Spring and pressure from an increase in the local population of Silver Eyes (birds) and no Marri Blossom.
