2014 Filius Cabernet Sauvignon

'Son of' the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. It carries the structure, power and tannins of classic Cabernet in an earlier drinking, more forward style from fruit sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards.

  • Colour

    Dark maroon and black cherry.

Intense blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, with complimentary coffee and chocolate aromas. These above earthy hints of sage, bay leaf, mushroom, truffle and venison.

Juicy and fine upfront with dark cherry succulence and a savoury dark chocolate sensation, akin to black forest cake. Vibrant fruit is carried with the bright acidity and attractive tannins building to the dry finish with lingering perfume remaining.
  • Winemaker's notes

'Filius' translates to son of in latin, reflecting the relationship between this wine and the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon; the estate's most historic red wine. Filius is a more approachable, opulent interpretation of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, a style renowned for its elegance and power. All fruit parcels were vinified and matured individually before grading post maturation to create a regional expression of the vintage.

  • Vintage Description

Another text-book vintage in Margaret River with consistent, almost rhythmic temperature patterns throughout the ripening season, resulting in excellent balance and physiological ripeness of fruit. Reasonable yields were obtained despite a handful of blocks being exposed to heavy storms in Spring reducing their cropping potential, but overall quality is excellent.

    WA Today - David Prestipino
A recent blind tasting by four local wine experts pitted a selection of premium WA cabernets against the best from around Australia. Not surprisingly, the local Margaret River drops scored highest, beating their more expensive interstate rivals. The real shock came when the highest-pointed wine was revealed - the lowest-priced in the line-up, the 2014 Vasse Felix Filius. An unbelievable first vintage for this wine and no doubt the best-valued cabernet in Australia. Must-buy.

What a stunning cabernet for the price. This is now the third tier behind the Marg cabernet and the Heytesbury, but in some ways that does it a disservice because it is a good wine. Tightly focused and structured in classic cabernet style. Leafy black fruit with a dusty cedary influence. Very good wine.

I think this cabernet from Margaret River might qualify as mellifluous. Which is not a word usually associated with this variety. Tobacco leaf, clove and gum leaf notes add sparkle, or at least complexity, to a pure, medium-bodied ooze of curranty fruit. Said fruit is the main driver. This is a perfectly balanced red, pitch perfect from start to finish. Accordingly it is good now, and should develop well over a good deal of time.

  • Balance and Value
    Winsor's Choice Blog
The Vasse Felix cabernets are Australian classics, benchmark Margaret River wines at the very pinnacle of what Australia can do. Now the Vasse Felix Heytesbury and Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon, current release 2013, have a baby brother in the 2014 Filius Cabernet Sauvignon. Designed as a more approachable, less-demanding sibling this offers immediate drinking pleasure at a very reasonable price. It still has the great fruit and savoury notes but without the structure that sometimes demands years in the cellar. I loved this wine, which also has a smidgen of malbec and petit verdot in the mix, for its fruit forwardness (nearly all the oak used is older barrels) inkiness, balance and value. Great work from winemaker Virginia Willcock.

Filius is the "second label" for Vasse Felix, but there are plenty of winemakers who would be happy to have this as their "first" wine, intense purple fruit, aromas of gum forest at dusk, fine grippy tannin.

  • Deep and Dark
This Vasse Felix Filius Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 seems dense and moody and deep and dark and if you suck hard - nose not mouth - you'll find a tickle of stuff like Bergamot mint and vague violet and meaty blueberry. These pretties get more cheeky as the wine airs. Sometimes I swear it even breathes a tiny zephyr of wintergreen.

"This first release is actually 85% cabernet sauvignon, 13% malbec, 2% petit verdot. "Filius" translates to "son of" in latin, reflecting the relationship between this approachable wine to the original and much loved Vasse Felix cabernet sauvignon."

Epic tasting last night of Margaret River's finest... And this one reared its head to gain equal highest points! 2014 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon new to the Filius range: cassis, wild strawberry, creamed blackberries, black pepper, earth, soil and slate. Delicious!

An intense nose with a whiff of green pepper and baked damp earth. Smoky oak and vanilla combine with dark fruit and grassy undertones. The fine mouth-coating tannins are still showing youthful muscle, and there's a graphite infused finish. Drink 2017-2021
