Although our commitment to Shiraz is historic - with the oldest Shiraz vines in Margaret River - the Vasse Felix Shiraz style is modern, cool climate elegance. Wild fermented in small batches, the wine’s complexity is deep and true to its unique environment. Only the highest grade vineyard sections make this fine, small volume Shiraz.
A cool, high-humidity start to vintage meant we benefited greatly from precise canopy management to mitigate disease pressure and optimise sun exposure for the fruit. The success of this program enabled us to harvest ripe, clean fruit with slightly lower alcohol and great natural acidity. Mild conditions allowed for extended ripening, creating beautiful aromatics and fine ripe tannins in our reds. Marri Blossom was non-existent throughout the region in 2019, resulting in the largest netting program ever seen at Vasse Felix to protect the fruit from bird damage. Overall, a labour intensive vintage that resulted in beautiful quality fruit.

I can not remember enjoying a Margaret River Shiraz more than this vintage from Vasse Felix for a very long time, if ever. Vasse Felix have been increasingly sourcing fruit from the cooler, southern end of the region and it has paid off with a wine that would not be out of place in France’s Northern Rhone Valley. Deeply coloured, this is a sophisticated, powerful and seriously complex example of Australian cool climate shiraz. Gently aromatic charcuterie, white pepper, cloves, cranberry, iron filings and earthy notes are immediately impressive, with older oak sitting just underneath. The palate is more serious with an intense core of dark, spicy fruits wound up tight by firm acidity and mouth coating tannins before a long and tight finish. It is a little sinewy and firm right now, as many great cool climate Syrah begin their life, but, have no fear, this wine will build more flesh over time to reward your patience.

This is all about sunshine and shade; yin and yang. The fruit is both bright and red (vibrant and juicy), but it has shades of midnight depth and broodiness, too. It is fragrant, floral, spicy, satisfying and modern. The oak has been sensitively managed and as a result, is already integrated. Super-smart stuff.

Fine, elegant and refined with superb cool-climate fruit on show. The fruit is very pretty, but the textural, savoury notes elevate this to another level. Seamless and supple, the feathery tannins build on the finish adding depth. Age-worthy and good value.

Vivid purple colour with concentrated, essency white-pepper, spice and red-berry fruit aromas. The wine is attractively flavoured and quite intense, the tannins present but balanced, supple and gently grainy, drying the finish nicely. White pepper aromas and flavours came through more and more. A very elegant and quite fragrant medium-bodied shiraz.
