A graceful and modern Margaret River Shiraz with lively dark berry fruit, subtle earthiness and a plush, medium-bodied palate. Crafted from fruit sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards, with a focus on our cooler climate, southern Margaret River fruit.
2020 was a warm vintage with low yields resulting in good quality. Spring development was early followed by a warm start to summer and continuing into fine sunny, dry conditions throughout the summer months. This, combined with lower yields, brought an early start to harvest. Happily, we experienced minimal bird pressure due to the timely arrival of Marri Blossom and there was no disease pressure. Following the completion of white harvest, a rainfall event in late February provided a timely drink for the reds. Bird pressure increased resulting in the netting of our red varietals. The faster ripening period combined with lower yields led to incredible concentration in our red varietals, with substantial tannins and rich fruit flavour.

100% whole-berry wild ferment, matured for 13 months in seasoned oak. New to the Filius family, the shiraz bursts onto the scene from a vintage that birthed effortless, delicious, gorgeous wines. Shiraz in particular was outstanding in ‘21. This is structured and spicy, but it is also supple, pliable and super-juicy: a bounty of red and pink fruits are overlaid with careful winemaking detail, all of it laced together with fine tannins. Powdery and beautiful. Yes!

Margaret River can be a good hunting ground for Shiraz drinkers looking for more subtle but still full flavoured red wines without quite the kick seen in many South Australian examples. The Filius Shiraz from 2020 certainly delivers that with its quite deep colour which is amply supported by fleshy blackberry, cola, clove and black pepper spices. There is good mouthfilling richness and levels of flavour to follow, particularly blackberry and mulberry, in a mid-weight package. There is also attractive balancing tannins underneath which will provide good support for the next five years. Enjoy with seared lamb backstraps. Drink: 2021 - 2025
